VAN GOGH PAINTINGS

  • The Impressionist movement began in the 1860s.
  • The artists are more concerned with the light and color of the moment than with the details of objects.
  • They often painted outdoors and worked quickly to capture the light before it changed.
  • Rather than painting religious figures or royalty, impressionists painted people like the local tavern owner, a girl awaiting the beginning of a play, or workers resting. They often used their own family and friends as subjects in their paintings.
  • They used many short brush strokes and applied paint thickly.
